Microsoft is slowly unveiling its grand plan of taking over Android and having their apps take Google’s own apps head-on. First it was Bing Snapshots on tap launching before Google Now on tap, then Microsoft announced its plans of bringing Cortana to Android. Here’s the latest on that front, Microsoft just released the public beta of Cortana for Android today.

Microsoft has been readying Cortana for its Android debut for a while now, the latest feature – ability to select Cortana and replace Google Now when you press the Android home button. Since Cortana doesn’t have full access to the Android device like it does in Windows, you won’t be able to say “Hey Cortana” for voice commands.

Users can access the Cortana app for Android from Play Store where they will need to apply to become a Beta tester. Cortana on Android is currently available in the U.S. only. Since it is only in Beta, we can expect a lot of bugs to still be present.

Yes, Microsoft software and applications always comes with a catch (at least until the final launch)!

As said before Cortana for Android public beta version is only available in the US as of now, it is certainly not installable on any device outside of the country. However, we have managed to grab the APK file of the application and can be sideloaded into any device. It just works flawlessly!

In case you don’t know how to install APK files on your Android device, just follow the below steps:

  1. Android Kitkat and below devices: Goto Settings and get into security option. Inside security, scroll down and check the “Unknown Sources” option. You will be prompted with security content attached to it if you enable, just press OK.
  2. Android Lollipop: Once you click on the APK it will show the popup to enable it, select “Settings” from the popup which will take you to the screen where “Unknown Sources” option is available. Just like above, check the option and accept the security risk by clicking on OK.
  3. Download Cortana for Android APK file.
  4. Now go back to your file manager installed on the device, click on the APK file (if download on the mobile, it will reside in Downloads folder). Continue accepting the options shown and your device will be done installing the Cortana APK.

Though it is cannot be considered as a daily driver, Cortana for Android is indeed in making to be a worthy competitor for the Google Now. Hope you have installed this app following our steps. Do share your feedback about the application with us by hitting the comment section below.
