Once dared to become an alternative to Stock Android operating system, Cynogen Inc. saw an end already. The company took some daring decisions by jumping between partners vigorously. All plan went haywire and the company saw no growth with hasty decisions. Hence, here comes the end of Cyanogen Inc. and the death of most loved community ROM, CyanogenMod! But wait! Is this the end or beginning of new era in the name of Lineage OS?

More than Cyanogen Inc., CyanogenMod (CM) was one of the most loved custom operating system that the community supported for so long. The developers behind CyanogenMod made sure that the devices never felt left out though the manufacturer abandoned! This custom mod was the heart of most of the kickass and beautiful custom ROMs. But it all comes to end this year! Can the developer community survive without CM?

Over Ambitious Cyanogen Team!

In early 2015, Cyanogen Inc. said,

We’re making a version of Android that is more open so we can integrate with more partners so their servicers can be tier one services, so startups working on [artificial intelligence] or other problems don’t get stuck having you have to launch a stupid little application that inevitably gets acquired by Google or Apple. These companies can thrive on non-Google Android.

The company was all into taking over Android away from Google. Reasoning, Google’s hold over the inbuilt applications and service. Cyanogen Inc. wanted to make Android customizable to the core.

It went on to get funding from Microsoft and in return made their application pre-installed into their Cyanogen OS. However, none of these had any effect on CyanogenMod code. Though both of them shared the common codebase.

Cyanogen Inc, Shuts Down! Death of CyanogenMod 🙁

Well, on a sad note, as a company itself Cyanogen Inc. has announced its end. The company says,

As part of the ongoing consolidation of Cyanogen, all services and Cyanogen-supported nightly builds will be discontinued no later than 12/31/16. The open source project and source code will remain available for anyone who wants to build CyanogenMod personally.

Once looked revolutionary team in making to take Android away from Google has shown the gate within a couple of years. What came in more surprising is, CyanogenMod also gets the death penalty along with the company. There won’t be any more development on the most used and famous custom OS. But the team chose to make it available for the interested group to carry on from where it is left over.

CyanogenMod has served for 8 long years and they have been the main source for a lot of other custom ROMs. We saw the death of Paranoid Android and now CyanogenMod. Are we going to see the end of customs ROMs?

CyanogenMod gets Rebirth with Lineage OS!

After a roller-coaster ride so far in terms of Cyanogen Inc. and CynogenMod, the developer community had panicked about the future. But on a twist and prevailing conditions, the new name has emerged out of nowhere that will be taking over CyanogenMod.

A few developers who has worked on CynogenMod have come together to carry forward for the legacy. But with the new name called, Lineage OS. The team has gone live on social media platforms and their own brand new portal (with much info on the future plans as of now).

On their first intro, the Team Lineage OS says,

So, yes, this is us. LineageOS will be a continuation of what CyanogenMod was. To quote Andy Rubin, this is the definition of open. A company pulling their support out of an open source project does not mean it has to die.

The new team is planning to share more details about the new Lineage OS in a couple of days. Though we feel sad about the end of Cyanogen Inc. which has once taken rough decisions with their partners like OnePlus in favor of new partners has come to this level. I must reiterate, over ambitious plans led them towards the dark.

In the end, Goodbye, Cyanogen Inc. and CyanogenMod. Hola, Lineage OS!
