With an eye on the country’s enormous featured phone segment, Mozilla is all set to bring $50 priced Firefox OS smartphone in India later this month. A month back, Mozilla had announced their partnership with Intex and Spice. With no doubt, this device will be manufactured by Spice Retail limited as per their recent announcement.
Well on the other side, smartphone industry under fire due to the recent entrant’s, ASUS Zenfone series and Xiaomi in India. These two manufacturers have bought great high devices at very low price tag! Asus managed to sell 40,000 devices in a week!
According to IDC, smartphone sales grew 181 percent year on year in India in 2013. Meanwhile, around 78 percent of the 250 million handsets sold in India last year were still featured phones. This is where Mozilla is planning to enter and build a bridge for featured phone users to shift to smartphones at same price.
What is Firefox OS?
Firefox OS is built on open Web standards and runs HTML based applications. There is a Mozilla marketplace which has a handful of popular applications like Pinterest, Twitter, Facebook etc.
Mozilla’s Plans with Firefox OS in India
According to an interview with Digitimes, company COO and Mozilla Taiwan CEO Gong Li said,
Mozilla initially launched Firefox smartphones in the Latin America and Europe markets in July 2013 and has sold about one million units, Gong said. Mozilla has been able to cooperate with only 1-2 mobile telecom carriers in each country in the two regional markets, but will instead cooperate with more than 10 retail chains in India, Gong indicated. Therefore, Mozilla expects better sales performance in the India market, Gong added.
Back in February, Mozilla partnered with low-cost chip solutions developed by China-based Spreadtrum Communications to produce $25 worth smartphone powered by Firefox OS which will carry a retail price of up to $50. Same specced hardware may enter India with Intex or Spice.
In the same interview, Gong Li also said, they have partnered with 10 hardware partners in India to bring a vast variety of Firefox OS smartphones in the country. In the past the company had also tied up with LG, Alcatel, Huawei and ZTE to name a few big players. They managed to sell $60 worth smartphones in other regions.
Mozilla has managed to sell 1 million units already. With an aim to sell 10 million Firefox smartphones over the next year, Mozilla is betting more on Indian market. Will it be a success in India? We got to wait and watch.
A market lead by numerous Android devices starting from price range of 3000 and more, Mozilla will sure have a tough task ahead to attract users. As they are planning to enter at low cost featured phone segment, it will be a little easier for the company.
We will bring you more info on this matter in the coming days. Stay tuned!
